Hair and Beauty Glossary


This is a glossary of terms for hair and beauty to aid the D/deaf. Select the term you are interested in and click on the word video to open it full screen or press the play button on the embedded video clip. 


The signs used in these clips are known and used by the learners at Vision West Nottinghamshire College. 


They are intended to be used solely as a resource and do not necessarily represent definitive BSL signs.

A

Alopecia

Baldness.


Arrector Pili Muscle

helps keep the body temperature (hair stands on end)


B

Base Colour

A colour product for hair.


Black

A colour.


Block

A dummy head (hair block) used for practising cuts, styles and techniques.


Blonde

A colour, a light grayish yellow.


Bond

A link or joining. One item bonds to another.


Brown

A colour.


Brush

BrushesAn implement that has 'bristles' firmly set into a handle, used for grooming the hair.


Brush Applicator

A brush - usually small, for applying products.


C

Chair

An item for sitting on.


Clip

ClipsA device for holding the hair in sections.


Comb

CombsA device used for disentangling hair. Usually flat with pointed teeth on one edge.


Conditioner

A product that makes hair soft, rebuilds hair, closes down cuticles.conditioner


Cortex

A hair layer under cuticle has pigment and bonds.


Cuticle

The outside layer of hair overlap like tiles on a roof.


Cutting

The act of shortening by chopping off the ends. An activity often carried out with scissors.


D

Damaged Hair

Hair that has had something happen to it to cause a defect.


Dandruff

Flaky scalp. 


Dark

Depth of hair colour.


Dark Hair

Hair that is not pale coloured. Depth of hair colour.

Second layer of skin.

Effleurage

A stroking movement. Usually carried out at the start of shampooing.


Elasticity

Stretch of the hair.


Epidermis

Top layer of the skin.

Foil

FoilUsed during highlighting sections of hair.


Fragilitas Crinium

split ends due to physical/ chemical damage


Friction

(A quick movement) An action to encourage blood supply.


G

Gel

GelUsed to hold hair in place. Makes hair stiff.


Ginger

A term used to refer to people with red coloured hair.


Gown

GownA protective garment worn to keep the clients clothes clean.


Grey

A colour mid way between black and white.


H

Hair Brittle

A type of hair.


Hair Condition

How the hair is.


Hair Conditioner

A product for conditioning the hair, makes the hair soft, rebuilds the hair and closes down the cuticle.


Hair Density

Number of hairs on the head.


Hair Dry

Type of hair.


Hair Dryer

Hair dryerHand held or hood dryer for setting.


Hair Greasy

Type of hair.


Hair Normal

Type of hair.


Hair Papilla

Feeds hair with blood supply.


Hair Spray

Hair sprayUsed to hold style in place and protects from weather.


Hair Texture

Fine, medium or thick.


Hair Type

Dry, brittle, normal, greasy, wiry.


Hygroscopic

Takes in water, as in hair is Hygroscopic.

Kit

kitA collection of the required tools.

Light

Hair depth, how dark or light hair is.


Light Hair

Hair depth. How dark or light the hair is.

Medulla

Middle of the hair.


Mirror

MirrorA shiny surface for reflecting an image.


Monilithrix

Beaded hair shaft.


Mousse

MousseFoaming product used to style hair.

Perming Rods

Perming RodsSmall rods used in the perming process.


Petrissage

(deep, slow movement) kneading actions.


Porous

Lets in water / moisture.


Psoriasis

Silvery raised skin, itchy.


R

Red

A colour. One of the three primary colours.


Rollers

RollersA small round item.
Wind down with thumbs when setting.


Rotary

Circular movement when shampooing.


Rubber Cap

A tool used in certain colouring techniques.


S

Scissors

ScissorsA cutting tool. Can be grouped with 'sharps'.


Sebaceous Cyst

Swelling oil gland.


Setting

A technique of putting and keeping hair in place.


Shampoo

ShampooA product to clean the hair or the act of using the product - to shampoo.


Shower Spray

A tap attachment to spread the water.


Sink

A bowl shaped fixture used for washing hands etc.


Straightener

StraightenerA device for straightening the hair.


Strand Test

checking colour for development.

Test Curl

Check for S shape development.


Tongs

TongdA two pronged tool used to style the hair.


Towel

TowelsA piece of absorbent cloth for drying or wiping.


Trichorrhexis Nodosa

A split along the hair shaft.


U

Uniform

A code of dress identifying the staff in a salon.


W

Wax

WaxUsed to define curls or style.


White

A colour. Very light.


Work Station

A position where work is carried out.
